Perhaps?

I would indeed hope that in light of the Uvalde shooting that immediate action would be taken. The Federal government cannot tackle this gun violence problem alone. It's going to take everbody, from voters, to city, municiple, county, and state officials to enact a plan to boost security in our schools. This is a dire emergency. We must act fast, but local communities in remote areas need Federal assistance. This is an idea that I brainstormed and then l created a scripted scene: STATE OF THE UNION ADDRESS JULY 20th, 2022 From the White House briefing: President Biden announces nationwide vigil for mass shootings; enlists congressional submitee to structure a plan to demand all public schools have security lock systems, bulletproof windows and security checkpoints. A tidbit of this imagined conversation: "As l have stepped up to the podium to address this gut-wrenching challenge of facing our nation's worst epidemic, gun violence, l first of all, plead Americans to t...

From Global Warming to Global Overheating

In light of yesterday's heatwave, on July 19, 2022, which was devastating, people who question global warming may really need to redress their reasoning. In England and across Europe temperatutes reached unprecedented levels. The death toll in Great Britain was over 1,500 causualties as a result of temperatures climbed above 104°. Across portions of the South, into the Midwest temperatures were in the triple digits. 112° was reported in Little Rock, Arkansas. Scientists say that the U.S. is expected to experience these summer mega-heatwaves more frequently. I won't forget the heatwave here in Georgia in 2012. It official temperature broke the 1980 record of 105° by a degree. I worked as bike security, monitoring vehicles on a parking deck at Hartsfield-Jackson Airport in Atlanta. I worked the top deck which was outdoors, exposed to the hot sun. Our supervisor gave us stern warnings regarding the heat and staff members were to hunker down in air-conditioned offices between twi...

ROBERT STEWART

I first met Robert back in the spring of 1999. I had attended several bi-nature support groups with Barry and Sherry who co-facilitated at the First E building in the fall of 1998. Both were UU followers who strongly encouraged me to attend a Sunday Celebration of Life. I was a member of an LGBT affirming Christian Church and while l was curious, l had mixed feelings about attending a non-Christian church. Upon entering the building, guess who was the first to greet me? Robert. Then later Betsy Henderson and Cindy Lou Who greeted me with that wholesome handshake. Robert facilitated countless COL's, sent e-blasts for last-minute announcements; tirelessly sent "First Existentialist This Sunday" and " First Existentialist This Past Sunday", EVERY WEEK without skipping a beat. I felt at home hearing that smooth, calming Southern drawl from his mid-Alabama roots. Robert came from a Baptist upbringing, was a left-leaning Republican (not many of those around) who had a...

March on Washington with the Poor People’s Campaign.

June 18th. 2022 I have been waiting all my life for this. I couldn't have picked a better day to March on this day than this. A cool front wind, blue skies with intermittent clouds, I mean it was heaven. It's been over two years since I traveled out of the state of Georgia. The Georgia Poor People's Campaign contingency all wore brightly yellow-colored t-shirts, as I have shown in the photos. I ran into folks from the DC area, Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, Texas, Louisiana, Pennsylvania, Colorado, Florida, Tennessee, Massachusetts, Illinois, Indiana, Cleveland, Ohio and Michigan. The theme of our March is WE WON'T BE SILENT. No, we won't be silent, no longer. Yes, indeed there was chanting and yes, the singing uplifted the weary souls! TWO STEPS FORWARD, NO STEP BACK! Reverend Barber was the main speaker. The main topic rested on the Third Reconstruction and the 7 Steps to follow for this Moral Revival.  This drive was his urgency in getting out the vote an...

The dire health consequences of the recent Roe decision

This is a continuation of my last blog. The decision of the 5 to 4 Roe vs Wade decision was made in January of 1973. I was a teenager, restless and easily distracted, and was aware of the decision, but felt at the time a topic unrelated to my day to day life... ...as long as I minded my p's and q's... ..which I  did. My fellow church mates at the local Baptist church never brought up the topic. Perhaps too egregious of a discussion to be brought up in Sunday School. In the later years, abortion became a very hot topic. Anti-abortion protests erupted. Abortion doctors were murdered and death threats to healthcare providers were prevalent.  Even if l felt sad or angry of a child being yanked away from natural life l failed to realize at the time the dire and devastating consequnce of an unwanted pregnancies that women face. That persuasion allowed me to see the while picture. As I said in my last blog, this recent overturn of Roe will put a vast population of Americans in a ment...

Where the abortion issue stands

This is going to be a long, but necessary debate, but without unnecessary rebuttals. My first observation is that the "pro-lifers" are elated over the decision by the Supreme Court. Their religious valuing of life is well-meaning but but misguided and dangerous. While this debate rages on, women across America are dying. Lack of access to natal care will become more prominent if we don't reach out to these targeted communities, often in rural, small town and Indigenous communities. The decision to turn down Row will have far-reaching consequences: the disappearance of pre-natal and post-natal care facilities in rural and remote communities. First of all we must talk about birth control, BEFORE bringing up the topic of abortion. The far right wants easy answers to fit their insightless agenda. There are no easy solutions. However, l haven't seen anyone that supports anti-abortion discuss the fact that men play a role in this. Way too many women are being impregnated by...
